Hipparchia alcyone is very similar to Hipparchia genava ; it is therefore difficult to separate these two species on the base of external examination only.
The individuals on this page were identified according to the morphological criterions and the distribution maps proposed by the authors below ; it appears that not all the specimen of H.alcyone meet the typical external features of this species. It is recommanded to check several butterflies within the same population and have a close look at the genitalia, in order to make a reliable identification.
