<< caterpillars of Adonis Blue (Lysandra bellargus) found on Hippocrepis comosa ; in the photograph below the larva is attended by ants of genus Myrmica. Not all Lycaenid butterflies need ants, but about 75% of species associate with ants in a relationship called Myrmecophily. Another example of this ant-Lycaenid larva relationship is shown down below with a caterpillar of Escher's Blue - Var (France) - 12/04/2014

<< close-up of the larva's rear part showing a drop of sugar-rich honeydew produced by the Newcomer's gland (orange arrow). When stimulated by ants the caterpillar produces this secretion which is avidly licked by them. It takes a while before the caterpillar releases a drop of liquid ; as the ants get quite nervous, the larva releases some chemicals as well which calm them down and avoid attacks - Var (France) - 12/04/2014
