Hipparchia alcyone is very similar to Hipparchia genava ; it is therefore difficult to separate these two species on the base of external examination only. A distribution map is shown on the right, made from the confirmed records mentioned for France by T.Lafranchis in 2).
The individuals on this page were identified according to the morphological criterions shown here and the distribution map. It appears that not all the specimen of H.alcyone meet the typical external features of this species. It is recommanded to check several butterflies within the same population and have a close look at the male genitalia, in order to make a reliable identification.
