Hipparchia genava

Lesser Rock Grayling
Le Sylvandre helvète

Hipparchia genava is very similar to Hipparchia alcyone ; it is therefore difficult to separate these two species on the base of external examination only. A distribution map is shown on the right, made from the confirmed records mentioned for France by T.Lafranchis in 2).
The individuals on this page were identified according to the morphological criterions and the distribution map. It appears that not all the specimen of H.genava meet the typical external features of this species. It is recommanded to check several butterflies within the same population and have a close look at the genitalia, in order to make a reliable identification.
